The Popcorn Muncher Podcast – Interview with The Heiresses writer-director Marcelo Martinessi

One of the most interesting movies hitting British cinemas this weekend is The Heiresses, from Paraguayan filmmaker Marcelo Martinessi. The film won awards at the Berlin Film Festival and is the intriguing tale of a wealthy lesbian couple separated when one of them is sent to prison for fraud. Having lived a sheltered life of luxury, Chela (Ana Brun) expands her horizons by driving other women around in her taxi.
I got the chance to sit down with Martinessi to chat about the process behind making the movie and the fascinating story of how Brun got the lead role and then almost pulled out of the project. We also talk about how The Heiresses fits into the current rise of queer cinema and the burgeoning movie industry in Paraguay.
