The latest fairytale delight from Guillermo del Toro, fantasy romance The Shape of Water, is out now in UK cinemas. To celebrate, I’ve taken a look through the director’s back catalogue to find the best examples of his love for monsters in all of their forms. Del Toro has always spoken of his love for creatures of darkness and his filmography is littered with memorable beasties, from the vampire of his debut Cronos to the terrifying fairytale monsters that are scattered through Pan’s Labyrinth.

Here are my top five Del Toro monster creations, from the conventional to the outright bizarre and from the surprisingly charming to the bone-chillingly scary.
