It’s the film news you didn’t know you needed to hear until you just read it – the sequel to penguin-themed animated hit Surf’s Up will feature the voices of WWE wrestling talent.
In Surf’s Up 2: WaveMania, the first film’s hero, Cody Maverick, will encounter a notorious gang of surfers played by WWE chairman Vince McMahon and wrestlers John Cena, Triple H, The Undertaker and Paige.
WWE Studios will collaborate with Sony Pictures Animation for the sequel to the 2007 film, which was nominated for an Academy Award. WaveMania is eyeing a 2017 release to tie in with the tenth anniversary of the original Surf’s Up.
It is unclear whether the first film’s star, Shia LaBeouf, will return to reprise his character. That might represent craziness overload.
Most of the WWE talent who have signed up for Surf’s Up 2: WaveMania are relatively inexperienced outside of the comfortable world of WWE Studios movies.
The exception is Cena, who has carved out an impressive career as a comedy movie supporting player in films like Trainwreck and Sisters. He also appeared alongside Mark Wahlberg in Daddy’s Home, with one of the best cameos of 2015.
He took to Twitter to express his delight at being part of WaveMania…
This was a lot of fun…sometimes you just have to ride the wave! Get ready for Surf’s Up 2 : Wavemania! pic.twitter.com/wHxccq0F4t

Henry Yu, protege of Hotel Transylvania director Genndy Tartakovsky, will make his directorial debut with the film. Abdul Williams is on script duties.
It’s unclear whether Surf’s Up 2: WaveMania will be a great film, or even a good one. The one certainty is that it will be one of the most bizarre cinematic spectacles of 2017.
Needless to say this will be a project I will be following very closely.
